HELLGATE: London Steam Edition Review

HELLGATE: London is back, and boy oh boy are you in for some surprises…

Please note that this Review may contain spoilers from the Original game

Some key points that this Steam Edition offers:

  1. Premium Content that used to be purchased with actual money can now be bought via in-game currency.
  2. All the DLC content for HELLGATE: London is included with this game.
  3. Permanent 30% XP boost.

Steam Edition:

Back then HELLGATE: London truly was an amazing game, it was fun, entertaining and one easily invested dozens upon dozens of hours into it. This could be done via Single or Multiplayer; they were both great sides to the same amazing game and story.

Again
Not Paradise!

The Steam edition comes with good and bad aspects.

All the available DLC content is included with the Steam release which is neat and a great value for money. A lot of players will re-experience these amazing add ons such as Stonehenge and several others will experience them for the first time.

The game has been updated to Tokyo 2.0 so you will truly get to experience everything HELLGATE: London has to offer.

Fight
You Vs everyone!

For a more detailed look at the original game, please read our review here.

Add on content:

  1. Stonehenge.
  2. Second Attack.
  3. Abyss.
  4. Tokyo.

Last but not least most of the premium content can now be purchased with in- game currency, items such as the extra bag space.

Gateway
To Paradise maybe?

MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:

HELGATE: London’s Steam version comes with both good and bad aspects, the nicest aspect here is to experience the game all over again after so many years, and this with all the extras that the game has to offer, however the biggest let down here is the fact that multiplayer has been removed completely, the game is now a fully Single Player game.

This does make the game less fun to be honest, a RPG can be truly fun with friends, but alas it was not meant to be for HELLGATE: London, do note that to compensate for the XP loss a permanent 30% XP boost boon has been added to the game so that is something to make up for some of the loss here.

The game has several more neat features to make use of, such as the mini game for every level; once you’ve killed a certain amount of enemies, a messenger from Hell appears, once it has been killed it drops a variety of goodies, such as the valuable essence for Stonehenge to gear and blueprints.

Long
The road has been long and hard!

The game has numerous small bugs that can be ignored and then some bigger ones. When you look at the graphics and visuals of the game it would come across that it looks like it has been downgraded, whether it just looks like that or if they actually patched it, is unknown, but as it stands the game textures look worse than they did with the original, the character models seem to be somewhat better, but overall the visuals look worse than the original.

When it comes down to the numbers the game sells for a very decent price considering you get all the content it has with the price, so that alone makes it worth a buy. For fans this will either be a must buy or a hard pass, London 2038 has its merits so this will come down to the individual and the lack of multiplayer does count against the game.

With some minor polishing this game can really be amazing, if they were to create a HD texture pack for this gem to bring it up to current gem hardware they can really go somewhere with this game.

Trials
I will survive!

HELLGATE: London had a bright future it just seems that the original team made some choices that lead it astray; I always hoped to see this grow into a franchise of its own…
