Mad Max Review

Ride the apocalypse as you sow destruction on all who would oppose you!

Some key points that this game offers:

  1. Massive Open World Environment
  2. A variety of extra actives
  3. Size Quests
  4. Tons of cars to collect

Gameplay & Controls:

The game can be played completely with the Keyboard and Mouse, or with your game controller. It comes down to preference here. The game offers full controller support. However, either method is comfortable and fun to make use of here.

The controls for Mad Max are pretty comfortable and quite decent. Max does feel a bit slow and sluggish at times, especially when you are on foot and exploring camps. The controls are very responsive which makes for fluid and fast paced combat. This experience is quite pleasant; When you are surrounded by enemies and you lay waste to them one at a time, you can parry and counter as they try to strike you, without the concern that the combat animation will hinder you.

I’m coming for you…

The game starts with Max searching for fuel when he is suddenly ambushed by a party of War Boys. During the cinematic entry, a massive fight takes place and Max loses Black on Black, and all of his gear. Left for dead, Max awakens in the middle of nowhere. This is where our journey starts.

Vengeance; Get back that which has been stolen, and kill anybody that gets in the way! Max sets out to do just that. To help him on this journey he will meet several NPCs who will offer aid to him as well as side missions. The game is divided into five regions, each more difficult than the previous. Each of these regions falls under a key NPC faction. As you go about destroying the War Boys camps, banners, and other territorial markers you will lower the overall threat in these regions.

Take
Take the wheel.

Mad max’s upgrade levels are rather unique. Each level that Max can reach has its own ten levels, and you gain XP for completing a variety of activities, such as killing enemies or clearing out War Boy threats. The Magnum Opus unlocks higher tier parts as you complete specific quests, or at certain reduced threat levels. The game has a lot to offer, there are hours upon hours of exploration and other activities waiting for you.

Graphics:

The wide Open World is beautiful in its own apocalyptic right! The destroyed buildings may not be much to look at, but that is intentional, this is a world that has gone to ruin! There is sand as far as the eye can see, accompanied by canyons and the traces of destruction.

A storm is coming!

The visual look that this creates sets the atmosphere perfectly for an Apocalyptic world! The explorable caves and camps have received quite the attention to detail. Each of these areas that you explore are unique in appearance and layout. They all resemble a broken down world perfectly.

The broken down structures show their years of decay visibly. The rust slowly eating away at these structures along with all the tears in them are beautifully implemented.

The view is quite lovely…

Character design was done rather remarkably. Features on all characters are done quite realistically. You can see how years of suffering have worn these people down.

The entirety of this world paints a fresh picture of what a world gone to hell can look like!

Under the settings, there are a variety of settings we can use to tweak the gameplay.

Sounds:

Rather amusing and entertaining. Driving through this massive wasteland is quite fun and relaxing; Whether, a band of War Boys are hot on your trail, or you are chasing down a patrol of theirs. The sound of that V8 makes it so worth it, you can’t help but turn the volume up to take it all in.

Exit
Exit, stage right!

The engine sounds are all very realistic and quite captivating. The background sounds do a decent job of bringing life into the world. Character voice overs were decently implemented. Each character has a personality and attitude of their own.

We have full volume control in the settings menu.

Replayability:

Unfortunately, there is no actual Multiplayer for Mad Max, something that truly makes the game lacking. It would have been a nice add on for the game.

However, there is plenty of replay value in the main game. The side quests, loot activities, and taking down all the camps and other enemy structures will keep you busy for quite a while and then some. Mad Max does offer races, quite a few of them to be honest. These alone will test your skills immensely and keep you entertained through the whole process.

Fight
Fighting time!

Don’t forget that there is a massive list of Achievements/ Trophies for you to hunt as you go about the game.

MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers Ahead:

Mad Max is quite brilliant in its own right. There is a massive broken down world to explore, take in, and enjoy. The sheer number of additional to do’s is quite a treat. Not only do they entertain you, but every completed activity plays a key role in making you stronger; Little by little Max and the Opus gets upgraded becoming power houses in their own right!

Meet
Meet the locals.

The biggest let down here is the lack of multiplayer for sure. However, the main campaign is rather short as well. You’re still playing the game, completing a mission here, taking the story in there, and then before you know it, the game is done. Don’t get me wrong, it is fantastic to play and quite the experience, however, they should have bulked the story itself up more. We have such a big world, filled with other friendly factions and so much potential. It feels like they missed a big opportunity here; They could have done so much more with this world.

The health system is another unique mechanic here that fits in well with the theme of the game. To replenish health Max needs to eat and drink water. Both of these items are quite scarce in nature, but not to the extent where it makes the game unnecessarily difficult.

Road
Road Rage is preferred!

The combat is rather brilliant and quite fun. Take down enemies in brutal and spectacular finishers. Activate Fury mode and unleash hell on your enemies. The fighting sequences aren’t hard at all, but they are tons of fun to experience and be in. Max makes it an art of kicking ass!

Even though I had a lot of fun playing Mad Max, it did become rather repetitive in the end. Too many looting areas, too much of the same stuff over and over. This can be attributed to the lack of additional content that could have lessened the repetitiveness of certain things by adding other things to do. Overall Mad max is a total must play game.

Triple barrel!
