Resident Evil 5 Review

Make sure you packed enough ammo, there are two of you this time!

Some key points that this game offers:

  1. Co-op Mode
  2. Online Versus Mode
  3. Refined and improved mechanics
  4. Gorgeous new setting
  5. New B.O.W types

Gameplay & Controls:

I’ve had the pleasure of playing this one on both the Xbox 360 and PC. It plays smooth and beautifully on both. The game can be played with a controller or Keyboard & Mouse on PC. The controller support is pretty decent as well. Character handling and combat is smooth and very responsive on either option. It will come down to your personal preference here.

Let's
Let’s rock this place!

The game features a variety of improved mechanics. They took what they created in RE4 and made it so much better, enhancing RE5 immensely, especially given that it’s the first Next Gen HD RE title. With RE4 they changed the genre up a tad, where we had a survival horror experience, RE4 turned into an Action Horror game, or at least strong Action Horror mechanics. It depends on how you viewed the game and what you made of it. Fans either loved the change up or hated it, but one thing is for sure, it opened up the doors for a brand new gamer base to experience what RE games can be like.

RE5 is a continuation of that; they took all those fun and exciting new mechanics and totally overhauled and improved them with RE5. That is not all they even added Co-op to the game. Alone with an AI, or with a friend, tackle the campaign together as a team.

Our story takes place in Kijuju, Africa, five years after the events of RE5. Chris now an Agent of the BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance) is dispatched to meet up with is his new partner Sheva Alomar, and together they need to track down a suspect intent on selling a BOW.

On
On the count of three!

Things quickly take a turn for the worst as the local community, show signs of being infected, and from here on it’s a fight for your very survival as you follow through with your mission. The game can be played solo with an AI or Co-op with a friend.  The AI itself is fair at best, she does a decent job fighting with you, sticking close to you, and even picking up items in the game. Speaking of items, everything is shared, right down to the last bullet! This adds a unique level of realism to the game whilst taking co-op gameplay to new levels. The game also held onto the Tank controls, for better or worse, it adds and builds on to the realistic combat mechanics that the game has. Retreat, stand and shoot, it may not be the greatest feature but it does add to the game’s quality. Topping it off is the inventory screen which you access and make use of in real time, this adds a whole new layer of realism to the game, luckily you have a partner to watch your back for you.

There is however one issue here with this control type, the melee, you have access to a machete. However, having to stand still and swing it makes it feel slow and cumbersome, so it is quickly left behind and forgotten, a missed opportunity for sure. The game does feature a multitude of other melee instances, such as stunning a Majini and then taking them down with some powerful melee actions.

Que
Que the Matrix!

The game takes place over a massive area but Is divided into chapters each comprised of several levels. Another heavily enhanced feature is the quick time events, there are plenty of them this time around, so be on your toes. Your journey may have started in a small village with just a pistol, but that is not where it will stay… Resident Evil 5 is going to take you for one hell of a ride!

Graphics:

Damn beautiful and quite out of this world. First off Capcom did a marvelous job preparing this one for Next Gen. The actors made use of motion sensors to accurately record facial features during voice over work, which was then incorporated into the GCI to give us the incredible cut scenes that we have.

The world itself has been beautifully created. The lighting and shadows do a marvelous job to add to and enhance the visuals of the game. Character models and rendering are on par with the rest of the game and Next Gen. There are a variety of enemy types and they have all been uniquely created in appearance.

That's
That’s new…

The level design was done just as well, every area has been beautifully created to give us a new experience every time we move from area to area. The new 3D cameras that they used really turned this game into a marvel that won’t soon be forgotten.

Sounds:

They totally stepped it up! Twentieth Century Fox orchestra was used to record the game’s score, and it came out a masterpiece. The soundtrack for the game is absolutely amazing, I cannot picture this game without it! Every single location is enhanced and made better by it!

This
This is new!

The background music further adds to that, bringing the game and its entirety to life. Let’s not forget the voice over artists who did one phenomenal job with their scripts. Our characters never looked or performed so beautifully!

Replayability:

The game offers a variety of difficulties, a ton of extras, and then some… It was made to be played again and again. The level design and playability were designed in such a way that replaying levels does not feel boring or repetitive. The action and short levels were cleverly designed to add to the replay value of this game.

We
We all know what is about to happen!

Then there is online Multiplayer where you can take on other players, solo or with friends.

MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers Ahead:

Totally one for the history books! If you loved what they did with Resident Evil 4 you are going to love every minute of RE5. It is RE4 totally improved and made better. If you weren’t a huge fan of RE4, you will still get your money’s worth out of RE5. It is a brilliant continuation of the franchise that also ties up a lot of plot and story holes left during the history of the game and RE4.

That new shop system was a refreshing change, allowing us to buy and sell in between every level, or upgrade weapons. The new co-op mode is exactly what the series needed, giving us the option to stand again hordes of zombies with a friend. Item sharing made sure to keep the challenge present and you on your toes. The abundance of mini bosses and bosses here gives you a thrilling excitement to look forward to.

Zombies
Zombies on bikes…

The real fun only starts when you beat the game, you unlock additional features and the totally amazing infinite mode for your weapons… Sounds enticing, I know! This and so much more awaits you… Another unique new addition was with the new zombies being able to use a variety of hand held weapon and even firearms and other dangerous weapons, you are in for one wild ride here.

The truth is, whether you are a hardcore fan, a new one, or just a zombie gamer, RE5 will give you one amazing experience, that will be more memorable than you can ever imagine…

MGR Gaming Score 8
