Warhammer® 40,000: Dawn of War® – Winter Assault Review

The War is not over yet soldier…

Some key points that this game offers:

  1. Two Single Player Campaigns, Order (Good) & Chaos (Evil).
  2. Full expansion pack to the original Warhammer 40, 000: Dawn of War game.
  3. New units, tactics and strategies allows for a fresh experience in Warhammer warfare.
  4. New and Improved multiplayer mode.
  5. New multiplayer maps.
All
All out war!

Gameplay & Controls:

The controls haven’t changed much; the game is still played the same way as the original, all the fun commands, tactics and keyboard shortcuts.

The gameplay is also the same except for a few changes such as the new single player campaign, the Imperial Guard.  Different troops, vehicles and tactics are available for you now. Unlike the Space Marines, the Imperial Guard troops aren’t nearly as strong as them, so instead of one squad of Space marines you will hold the line with several squads and heavy armour support to ensure the line is held….

Bane
Baneblade…

This may not sound as much fun, but I assure you Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War- Winter Assault delivers explosive combat, tactics and all new exciting challenges.

Graphics:

The game is an expansion pack to the original Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, so it makes use of the same amazing graphics, lighting and character detail that we experienced there. The same amount of effort and creativity has been invested into this one to once again deliver us a spectacularly beautiful game.

BFG
BFG.

Animations for the new Single Player Campaign races are brilliantly done, and the movie scenes are the exact level of high quality that we can expect from relic Entertainment.

We have numerous settings under the settings panel to choose from to ensure that our game runs just the way we need it to.

Sounds:

Unfortunately, Gabriel Angelos did not grace us with his Awe inspiring voice, but we have General Sturnn and he picks up the slack quite decently. The voice overs are just as amazing as the ones from the original Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, the same amount of quality went into producing the same level of excellence here.

Daemon
Die Daemon!

As for the music itself; it truly sets the tone for the battles, especially as we struggle to move inch by inch, the music truly paces us here.

Replayability:

The game has two different campaigns which can be played on a variety of difficulties, and to accompany that we have Skirmish mode and the option to play online with some mates, so plenty replay value right here.

Here
Here they come!

MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers Ahead:

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War- Winter Assault continues the franchise in the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Universe, unfortunately not in the form of our beloved Blood Ravens. This time we are in control of the Imperial Guard forces, the 412th Cadian Shock Troops Regiment under the command of General Sturnn.

We make planet fall on Lorn V, an Ice world that has been taken over by Chaos Space marines from the World Eaters Traitor Legion, and to make matters worse, there is also an Ork Warband present on this planet led by Warboss Gorgutz.

It
It’s alive.

Our task is to retake the planet and eradicate all of the Imperium’s enemies from Lorn V, and to help recover an Ancient weapon that fell here in a previous battle, a mighty Titan. Part of our tasks is to help a detachment of Ultramarines deliver the repair crews for this Titan in an Epic struggle against the enemies of the Imperium.

Multiplayer is all new and improved, delivering fresh and amazing gameplay as per usual, whether it is Skirmish mode or online, you are sure to have the time of your lives.

Might
Hero’s changes the tide of any battle!

All in all, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War- Winter Assault is an amazing follow up to Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, a longer campaign with a few more missions would have made this experience better though, but as it stands this is a must have.
