Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team Review

The Warhammer 40,000 universe has endless potential to bring us a never-ending flow of content… if developed properly!

Some key points that this game offers:

  1. Local Co-Op, play with a mate on the same screen.
  2. Choose from six different Space Marine Chapters.
  3. Exclusive Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine weapon.
Big
One big Mother!

Gameplay & Controls:

The controls for the game are pretty straightforward. We have a top down shooter that doesn’t make use of a lot of buttons, we move, we shoot and we smash. There are a few other options available too but this is the just of it.

Playing the PC port version can be done with either controller or keyboard and mouse. Playing with a controller is still just as simple and straightforward as the console version. If you prefer to use your trusty keyboard and mouse, fret not, the layout, handling and actual gameplay is still comfortable and very easy to use. If you are a hardened keyboard gamer then there will be no adjustment required what so ever.

There are a few remapping options available if you want to alter keys.

The gameplay is exactly what it sounds like; Lead an elite Kill Team to board an Ork Kroozer that is headed for an Imperial Forge World. Your mission; to purge every vile Xeno onboard the Kroozer, and the utter destruction of the Kroozer itself. You can choose from six different Space Marine Chapters to play as; The Salamanders, the Blood Angels, the Imperial Fists, the White Scars, the Ultramarines and last but not least the Blood Ravens.

Fight
Ready…. Fight!

There are four troop options to choose from; The Librarian, the Sternguard Veteran, the Techmarine and lastly the Vanguard Veteran. The game can be played solo or local co-op but it is best played with a full party of four members to truly get the most out of this game.

The game is broken down into levels; Each level has its missions and goals that you need to accomplish, these missions play a larger role in stopping the Ork invasion.

Run and gun or smash through the enemy lines as you take on wave after wave of Orks. Play strategically with your party to get the most out of each troop’s special abilities and weapon selections.

More variety would have gone a long way here; the game lacks a bit of depth when it comes to actual gameplay, you literally start a level, kill anything that moves and once that’s done the level ends. For a Warhammer 40,000 title this game lacks lore and story…

Orks
Death is on it’s way for you…

Graphics:

The game doesn’t look bad, the visuals are acceptable and the animations aren’t that bad either. Considering that this game is quite minimal it offers beauty and a memorable experience. Some more visual options would have been appreciated though.

The PC port itself is even more minimalistic, there are hardly any visual and graphic options or settings. The quality for the game could have been stepped up a bit to stay true to the Warhammer 40,000 standard.

Pain
Teach them the meaning of Pain!

Sounds:

Very bland, the game is fun and action packed, while it lasts though. The sounds for the game aren’t very broad or in depth. The Orks all make pretty much the same noises over and over, the same goes for their one liner lines. There is no flair or realism in the vocals or voice acting department.

The narrator’s lines feel way too scripted and not nearly as fluid as it can be. The background music however does a good job to keep you entertained whilst you explore this massive Kroozer.

Portal
Hell is about to enter the Frey!

Replayability:

Kill Team has the campaign mode and then Survival mode; The multiplayer options too allow for replaying, even if it is just to have fun with friends or to better scores.

There are in game unlockables and then achievements as well that can require you to replay levels to obtain them all, and to be frank the game is not bad at all, replaying it with some mates will be a fun experience.

Ranged
Long ranged destruction.

MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers ahead:

Kill Team could have been a lot better; this goes for the Console version and the not so great PC Port version. But not everything in the game is bad, it still offers a very fun and memorable experience, whether you go at it solo or with friends. The game will keep you entertained.

The game has several nice features; as you play and rack up kills you build up XP that unlocks passive abilities that you can equip to boost specific abilities or improve others. When you get to a beacon in game you can chop and change your characters layout which help plan more difficult levels.

Shiny
A Orks favorite colour; Shiny!

The additional survivor mode really gives you the chance to test your skills and see just how good or bad you are.

The game does have some bugs and technical issues. Some additional improvements or general QOL would have made this game much better but as it stands it is still playable and I’m sure most Warhammer 40,000 fans will get some fun out of this one.
