During a recent financial meeting, Square Enix announced the development of a new Just Cause game.
The first game in the Just Cause series was published in 2006 for PC, PS2, original Xbox, and Xbox 360, and was a fantastic open-world action-adventure game. Since then, three further sequels have been released, the most recent of which was released in 2018.
Square Enix has now casually announced the existence of a new installment in a recent investor’s briefing.
Yosuke Matsuda said in his statement:
“We want to focus on creating new titles that align with our strategy, including ones that leverage new IP. The JUST CAUSE franchise will remain our IP, and we are at work developing a new title in the franchise.”
Because this news was relayed in a financial report aimed at investors there are no confirmed details and the new “Just Cause “game mentioned could also be the mobile version which was due to be released this year.
If the new game is indeed Just Cause 5 it would be assumed that the same studio (Avalanche Studios) would do the development on it and there have been recent job listings for an “unannounced AAA game”. Avalanche is currently working on Contraband at the moment though so are they able to jump into such a large project as a new Just Cause installment?
In the briefing Matsuda also addressed the perception that Square Enix planned to use the proceeds from the sale of these studios to invest even more in blockchain and NFT malarky, thankfully It appears that this is not the case as he stated:
“Rather than using the proceeds from the divestiture in new investment domains such as NFT and blockchain, we intend to use them primarily to fund our efforts to foster solid IP and to enhance our development capabilities in our core Digital Entertainment segment.”
Although we can unfortunately not provide you with more on this juicy story just yet we will be keeping a close eye on it as it progresses and will keep you the reader up to date on the latest Just Cause news.
