Microsoft has officially reversed their decision to increase the price of their Xbox Live Gold subscriptions and has even issued an apology.
Microsoft has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons. Their decision to hike up the price of an Xbox Live Gold subscription was not received well and many people were up in arms about the controversial decision.
The news was first revealed as a rumour via a tweeted image of a six month subscription that cost a whopping $59.99.
Although we hoped it was a hoax it turned out to be true, which got a lot of people hot under the collar.
Since this massive disappointing hit, it seems Microsoft has now decided to reverse their decision to raise their prices so high.
After the price hike, a month of Xbox Live would have set you back $11, Three months would have cost you $30 and a six month membership would have been $60.
Phil Spencer himself has now realized that the price increase was a big mistake. He recently took to Twitter to issue an apology and stated that his team will “learn” from this mistake.
The official Tweet stated: “Apologies for all the angst and emotion this caused today for our customers. As always, we appreciate the feedback. This is a good learning opportunity for us and we will learn from it.”
In Microsoft’s Blog update they said “If you are an Xbox Live Gold member already, you stay at your current price for renewal. New and existing members can continue to enjoy Xbox Live Gold for the same prices they pay today. In the US, $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for retail 12-months.”
They also added that you won’t need a subscription to play “free to play” games on Xbox stating “You will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months.”
To bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience we will be removing Gold requirements for free-to-play games.
