Grand Theft Auto VI could be released in a little more than a year
After years of anticipation, the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI has gone live, confirming that the most-anticipated game ever will be released in 2025. Outside of this broad launch window, Rockstar Games hasn’t given a specific season or quarter in 2025 when GTA VI might be released. Based on what parent company Take-Two Interactive has said in the past, it appears that the next Grand Theft Auto will be released in the first half of the year rather than the second half.
Take-Two has begun to provide guidance for its investors regarding its 2025 fiscal year, which is set to begin on April 1, 2024 and end on March 31, 2025. Take-Two has stated that it expects to earn more than $8 billion in revenue this fiscal year, which is significantly higher than many of its previous earnings periods. With this in mind, the company believes that GTA VI will be the catalyst that brings in this windfall of cash, given how much the game will undoubtedly make once it is released.
If GTA VI is the reason Take-Two believes it will make $8 billion in its fiscal year 2025, it narrows the window in which the game will be released by a significant margin. With Rockstar intending to release Grand Theft Auto VI in the calendar year 2025, the only time this period would overlap with Take-Two’s fiscal-year 2025 would be between January and March 2025. As a result, it’s possible that GTA VI will be released at some point during this time frame, implying that the game is only about 12 to 15 months away.
It goes without saying that things could change drastically in the coming months. With Rockstar’s most recent major release, Red Dead Redemption 2, the open-world western title was delayed twice. RDR2 was supposed to be released in the fall of 2017, but it was delayed to the spring of 2018 and then again to the fall of 2018, where it was finally released in October. As a result, many fans are concerned that GTA VI will suffer a similar fate.
Furthermore, Take-Two may look to change its financial guidance in the coming months and may look to shift around its projections. Essentially, all of this means that Rockstar and Take-Two are unlikely to have a firm release date for GTA VI. Still, based on what we know so far, early 2025 isn’t out of the question when it comes to GTA VI reaching the hands of eager players. Whatever the release date of Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar has confirmed that it will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version of the game has yet to be confirmed, but given Rockstar’s track record, it appears that it will arrive months or years after the console iterations.
