Borderlands: Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot Review

Gearbox Software is back with the second DLC for us to improve our Borderlands 1 experience.

Please note that this Review may contain spoilers from the Base game

Some key points that this game add on has to offer:

  1. This game add on is purely arena-based combat, it can be done solo but is much more fun co-op, especially since it really has a grind factor to it.
  2. Three Game arena maps.
  3. A Bank, to store our hard-earned loot.
  4. 2 additional skill points can be earned from this DLC for your character.
  5. Another 5 Trophies and Achievements to be collected from here.
  6. A challenging experience.
Arena
One of the Arenas that you will do battle in.

Replayability:

Just like with Borderlands The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, we can continue with an already existing character choosing which playthrough to play on or starting a new character all together.

MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:

The DLC can be accessed in-game by using the Fast Travel system and heading for the starting location of The Underdome.

The game gives us a bank to store items which is amazing since space really is an issue for us, the bank can also be upgraded to increase its capacity so that we can store more gear. The gameplay and mechanics for the Underdome is very simple, there are rounds and each round consists of 5 waves with the last wave being the boss wave. With every passing round the difficulty is increased.

Cash
Cashing out so soon?

With every passing round, game altering rules are added to the round to keep things interesting and hard, a rule for example: Sniper rifles will do a lot more damage, every other weapon will barely make a scratch… The rules vary from round to round. Reaching the Underdome Moxxi will give you a quest to complete 5 rounds in the first arena, once completed you unlock the 20 rounds arena which can take easily up to two hours to complete with a good co-op team, the grind gets real and the difficulty gets insane.

Bank
The much needed bank to store extra weapons.

Each arena has a 5 rounds mode and then a 20 rounds mode. To obtain the achievements, the three twenty round modes have to be completed, each of them is tied to a single achievement and completing them all rewards a 4th one for the entire completion of the three arena modes. As fun as borderlands is, this DLC did not deliver the goods we were hoping for.

Single player or offline players will have an extremely hard time completing these arenas by themselves, especially since they offer a reasonable challenge for full parties too.  The enemies that you will be facing off against are all from the original Borderlands game, there are no new enemies that you will encounter.
