It’s not good news, but there was never much hope for it in the first place
If you were expecting for GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One after that spectacular announcement, you’ll be disappointed: just PS5 and Xbox Series X releases have been announced, and the only update we’re likely to see to that line-up is when the PC version finally arrives a little further down the road.
Will GTA 6 be available on PS4 or Xbox One?
The short answer is that GTA 6 will not be available on the PS4 or Xbox One, with the official press release stating that it will be available on “PlayStation 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X|S gaming and entertainment systems in 2025.”
That’s not surprising given how stunning the unveiling looks, or the fact that we’re now three years into the current console cycle. The cutting-edge technology behind everything we’ve seen so far is unlikely to run on Xbox One or PS4. While the trailer will have been adjusted and optimized to within an inch of its life and run on the highest settings possible, that is still the game running, not a CG approximation.
In the same press announcement, Rockstar Games founder Sam Houser stated that the game would “push the edges of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences.” So, as fantastic as it would be to play the game on earlier platforms, you won’t be able to achieve that level of ambition on the now-ten-year-old PS4 and Xbox.
The only other platform we’ll see Grand Theft Auto 6 on is PC, which could be anywhere from a few months to a year or two down the road. Right now, Rockstar’s primary focus will be on producing the game for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and leveraging that attention to make both platforms as excellent as possible.
